The ageing population is a significant social change issue facing society. The UK has 8-million citizens who identify as BME (Black, Minority, Ethnic) – 16% of the population. Elders are often the most vulnerable in our communities and are targeted by heartless criminals who seek to exploit the inherent fragilities associated with older age.
The Senior Minority Outreach team was established in 2014 to provide a specially tailored support service to older adult members of a variety of diverse communities who live within the South West of England & South Wales areas. The Team offers safety presentations to community groups at risk of financial frauds and general deception crimes.
The SMOT endeavours to cross the barriers of age, culture and language by joining groups within their own communities, addressing them in their language of choice and by delivering a comprehensive support service to those deemed to be most vulnerable in society.
The Senior Citizen Liaison Team (SCLT) was established as a social enterprise in 2009 and registered as a charity (1148383) in 2012 – the project featured in this entry. The Senior Minority Outreach Team (SMOT) was conceived in 2013 and became active in January 2014.
The project has been deemed highly successful in respect to engendering new engagement opportunities as well as delivering a themed crime prevention project to the highly vulnerable.
