The Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime has established the European Drug Trends Monitor to observe the developments on European drug markets across 11 major European cities, collecting data on retail and wholesale prices, availability, and criminal dynamics on these markets. The first issue of a series of European Drug Trends Monitor bulletins is now available.
It focuses on first research results on the threat of synthetic opioids in Europe and illegal online markets for prescription drugs, as well as on cocaine markets. TOC has found evidence for a booming criminal market on social media platforms for prescription opioids, a rather unexpected rear entrance for highly potent new opioids in Europe. While most attention has been directed to the potentially contracting heroin market and the possible shift to fentanyl or nitazenes as substitutes or contaminants, a new and widely overlooked market has emerged on online marketplaces.
