Child Abuse Prevention Month

More news about the topic

The month of April marks Child Abuse Prevention Month. Child abuse and neglect remain a critical issue in the United States, with devastating consequences for children, families, and society. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), at least 1 in 7 children experienced abuse or neglect in the past year—a number that is likely underestimated due to underreporting.

In 2021 alone, 1,820 children lost their lives to abuse and neglect. According to the National Library of Medicine, approximately one in four children experience child abuse or neglect in their lifetime. Beyond the human toll, child maltreatment also imposes a significant economic burden. In 2018, the total lifetime economic cost of child abuse and neglect was estimated at $592 billion, a figure comparable to the costs of major public health crises like heart disease and diabetes (CDC).

Preventing child abuse requires awareness, advocacy, and action. National Child Abuse Prevention Month recognizes the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect. Prevention services and supports developed by this collaboration can help parents, other caregivers, and communities protect children and strengthen families.
