Gender-based killings of women and girls are on the rise in Ireland

More news about the topic

Femicide — the gender-based killing of women or girls — is on the rise in Ireland. A new study has found cases increased from 19% referred to the Office of the State Pathologist between 2012 and 2020 to 29% from 2021 to 2023.

The research team examined the 97 gender-based killings of women or girls referred for formal forensic post-mortem examination from 2012 to 2023 and 96 died at the hands of a male perpetrator. Over half of women were killed by a current or former intimate partner while 20% were killed by family members.

The study carried out by the Office of the State Pathologist (OSP) found 41% of women were murdered in the home they shared with their killer.
