UN-Habitat

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has developed a unique position supporting urban development and the planning and building of a better urban future for next generations. This key process supports economic growth and social development, and reduces poverty and inequalities. UN-HABITAT established the Safer Cities Programme (SCP) in response to this predicament, to empower local authorities and other stakeholders in delivering urban safety and security, mainly in low- and middle-income countries. SCP aims to strengthen the capacity of local authorities to use good governance, appropriate urban planning and management, and reduction of acute vulnerabilities to diminish the incidence and impact of violence. The Safer Cities approach embraces a holistic and integrative solution to urban safety and security challenges, equipping and emboldening cities to adopt strategies and action plans underpinned by inclusive partnerships that contribute to broad and equitable enjoyment of the urban advantage. Over the past 25 years, the approach has implemented effective urban safety and security programmes in over 80 cities and towns worldwide. 

Following the adoption of the UN system-wide Guidelines on Safer Cities and Human Settlements by the First United Nations Habitat Assembly in May 2019, UN-Habitat, as the focal point for sustainable urbanization, is embarking on a process to support local governments towards their implementation, in collaboration with national and sub-national governments.
